Inflammaging & Your Brain

As we age, we may experience an increase in low-grade inflammation throughout our bodies. This in turn, may lead to a range of age-related health conditions known as inflammaging. However, there are steps we can take to help offset this risk and improve our overall health and well-being.

First and foremost, dietary strategies can play a crucial role in reducing the potential effects of chronic inflammation on the body and brain. Avoiding the standard American diet, high in ultra-processed calories, is one key recommendation. Instead, we should prioritize whole-food sources of fiber and plant nutrients, including those rich in phytonutrients like curcumin, anthocyanins, flavanols, and olive-oil polyphenols. Adequate dietary fiber may also help mitigate certain aspects of age-related inflammation.  In fact, the Mediterranean diet, which is rich in phytonutrients, fiber, and healthy fats has been shown to provide a potential offset to inflammaging pathways.

The prevalence of inflammaging and its impacts on our health will increase as the US population ages accompanied by higher risks of age-related health conditions.

In addition to dietary strategies, daily movement and exercise can also have a significant impact on reducing age-related brain inflammation. Exercise is a well-established brain-boosting intervention, with preclinical and clinical evidence showing it can enhance levels of neuroplasticity-promoting molecules like BDNF, balance immune responses, enhance metabolic health, and more. Recent research also suggests that exercise may inhibit excess brain activation by way of effects on microglial cells, which are brain immune cells that play a key role in detecting and responding to threats in the brain. In animal studies, exercise has been shown to prevent age-related activation of microglial cells, indicating its potential as an interventional tool for those seeking to offset the effects of age-related brain inflammation.

As we navigate the challenges and opportunities of aging, it is encouraging to know that lifestyle choices can play a significant role in promoting our health and well-being. By avoiding the standard American diet, prioritizing whole foods and plant nutrients, and engaging in regular physical activity, we can help reduce the risk of age-related inflammation and improve our chances of living a long, healthy life.
